3M Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Breath-Actuated Inaher

It’s been happening about once every 6.6 seconds for the past 25 years, and you probably didn’t even realize it. Is it a baby being born? Maybe someone filling up their car’s gas tank? The real answer could help you breathe easier today…

3M is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Aerolin(TM) Autohaler(TM), a breath-actuated inhaler that was developed at the company’s Loughborough, UK, site and first became available for asthma patients in 1989. Since that time, more than 120 million Autohaler units have been produced, delivering a number of different medications for asthma.

“The Autohaler device met a need because it ensures the patient receives the full dose at the correct point in the inhalation cycle, helping compliance and improving drug delivery to the lung,” explained Richard Moody, Global Respiratory Laboratory Manager, 3M Drug Delivery Systems.

A key area for future development is the focus on breath-actuated devices to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which the World Health Organization predicts will be the world’s third largest killer by 2030. So with one device produced on average every 6.6 seconds, the success of 3M’s breath-actuated technologies is only likely to accelerate.
