Schreiner MediPharm Introduces Multifunctional Security Label for GLP-1 Pens and Autoinjectors

As demand for injectable GLP-1 therapies continues to expand, pharmaceutical manufacturers are facing increased requirements for product authentication, tamper evidence, usability, and supply-chain visibility. Schreiner MediPharm is addressing these needs with a multifunctional label designed for injectable drug delivery devices such as pens and autoinjectors.

The new pen and autoinjector label combines several layers of physical and digital security within a single functional label. Its design incorporates visible authentication features alongside semi-covert and digitally readable technologies, providing multiple options for verifying product authenticity at different points in the supply chain.

Among the overt features is Schreiner MediPharm’s ShiftSecure technology, which produces a positive-negative visual effect that changes with the viewing angle. Additional authentication capabilities include microtext and InfraredSecure technology, while smartphone-readable printed codes and optional NFC functionality provide digital authentication and connectivity.

Together, these features are intended to support authentication by multiple stakeholders, ranging from pharmaceutical manufacturers and supply-chain participants to healthcare professionals and patients. Digital functionality can also support geo-tracking applications, helping companies monitor products and identify potential counterfeiting or gray-market activity.

The label is designed to make unauthorized access to a pen or autoinjector readily apparent. It extends across part of the device cap, so an attempt to open the package leaves permanent visual evidence. An optional NFC-enabled function provides an additional digital method for verifying first opening with a smartphone. The NFC chip extends the device into the digital environment, enabling potential applications such as interactive product information and user support. The construction is also designed to prevent the label from being discreetly removed and reapplied, helping deter unauthorized reuse.

Schreiner MediPharm customizes the functional labels according to individual customer requirements and can integrate them with existing pen and autoinjector platforms. The approach is intended to allow manufacturers to add security and digital capabilities while maintaining compatibility with established device designs.

Product information is protected by a label construction designed to resist abrasion during handling. Attempts to remove the label result in portions of the printed layer remaining on the device, providing additional evidence of tampering and helping prevent the device from being reused with its original labeling intact.

Beyond authentication and tamper evidence, the label is designed to provide additional functionality without requiring a fundamental change to the underlying pen or autoinjector platform. The expanded label area provides room for product information, larger type, and customized graphics. This additional space can support both regulatory and user-oriented information while creating opportunities for more prominent brand presentation.
