Onyx Scientific Invests More Than $2 Million to Expand API Manufacturing Capacity
Onyx Scientific is expanding its small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing operations in Sunderland, UK, with an investment of more than $2 million aimed at increasing capacity for both commercial and early-stage drug development programs.
The expansion will add four Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) manufacturing suites to the company’s Sunderland facility, increasing the total number of suites from six to 10. The additional capacity is expected to become operational during the first quarter of 2027.
Along with the new manufacturing space, Onyx is investing in supporting infrastructure and equipment. The company says the expansion will allow it to accommodate a greater number of commercial manufacturing campaigns while maintaining the scheduling flexibility needed for early-phase GMP programs, where development timelines can change quickly as new data become available.
According to Onyx Scientific Commercial Director Chris Atherton, demand has been increasing across both the company’s early-phase development and commercial manufacturing pipelines. Expanding the facility is intended to provide additional capacity as those programs progress and give production teams greater flexibility when managing projects with different timelines and manufacturing requirements.
For early-stage programs in particular, the additional suites are expected to help Onyx respond more readily when clinical or development milestones accelerate manufacturing requirements. The larger GMP footprint will also make it easier to schedule time-sensitive development work alongside ongoing commercial production.
The project represents a further investment in Onyx Scientific’s Sunderland operations and the life sciences sector in North East England. Regional economic development officials have identified life sciences as an important component of the area’s economic growth strategy, with manufacturing investments such as the Onyx expansion expected to support skilled employment in the region.
