New Hovione Facility Expands U.S. Capacity for Poorly Soluble Drug Development

CDMO Hovione has opened a new 31,000-square-foot facility at its East Windsor, New Jersey campus, doubling its US spray drying capacity as the company expands its integrated drug development and manufacturing capabilities. The newly opened 89 Twin Rivers facility houses two GMP-ready, commercial-scale PSD-3 spray dryers. The additional capacity strengthens Hovione’s ability to support customers across drug substance manufacturing, spray drying and oral drug product production within the same integrated platform.

The facility operates under the East Windsor campus’s existing FDA registration and harmonized quality system. According to Hovione, this approach can help reduce technology transfer requirements, simplify scale-up and provide greater continuity as drug programs move from development toward commercial manufacturing.

Hovione is targeting a longstanding formulation challenge in the pharmaceutical industry: poor aqueous solubility. Its spray drying technology is used to produce amorphous solid dispersions designed to improve the bioavailability of poorly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The opening of 89 Twin Rivers completes Hovione’s current $100 million U.S. investment program and represents the first major milestone in the company’s longer-term expansion of its East Windsor campus. Executives say the investment is intended to address increasing demand for spray drying while integrating the technology with Hovione’s broader drug substance and drug product capabilities.

Hovione plans to continue developing the East Windsor campus over the next five to 10 years. The company has outlined plans for approximately 15 acres of adjacent property to be developed into a 125,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. The planned expansion is expected to include additional laboratories, commercial-scale spray drying and oral drug product manufacturing capabilities. Hovione also plans to offer customers opportunities to co-invest in the development, potentially providing priority access to its proprietary technology platforms and engineering expertise.

The investment forms part of Hovione’s strategy to establish a network of autonomous but harmonized development and manufacturing sites across North America, Europe and Asia. The company said its US expansion, together with recent investments in Portugal and Ireland, is intended to support regionalized supply networks, dual-site manufacturing strategies and greater supply chain resilience.
