Quotient Sciences and Acesion Pharma Partner to Accelerate Formulation Development for Atrial Fibrillation Programs

Quotient Sciences and Acesion Pharma have entered into a collaboration to apply Quotient Sciences’ AI-enhanced formulation development capabilities to Acesion’s early-stage small-molecule pipeline targeting atrial fibrillation. The collaboration combines Quotient Sciences’ formulation development expertise with its Translational Pharmaceutics® platform, using active machine learning and Bayesian optimization to evaluate formulation options and help identify drug products with the potential to perform successfully in the clinic. For Acesion, the approach is intended to provide additional insight during early formulation development and support more rapid decisions as its atrial fibrillation programs progress toward clinical testing.

Quotient Sciences’ Translational Pharmaceutics® platform integrates formulation development, drug product manufacturing and clinical activities to help pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies move drug candidates through early development. The platform has been used for more than two decades to support early-stage drug development programs. Its formulation development capabilities are now being augmented by an AI-enhanced solution that uses active machine learning and Bayesian optimization to learn from experimental data and guide subsequent formulation studies.By applying these techniques earlier in development, teams can assess formulation performance and refine development strategies with fewer sequential iterations. The objective is to focus resources on drug product candidates that show the strongest potential for progressing into clinical development. For Acesion, the collaboration will explore how this approach can be applied to the oral formulation development of its small-molecule compounds for atrial fibrillation.

“Bringing AI-enhanced formulation development together with Translational Pharmaceutics® is intended to give development teams greater insight at a stage when formulation decisions can have a significant impact on clinical timelines,” says Dr. Andrew Lewis, Chief Scientific Officer at Quotient Sciences. “We are pleased to collaborate with Acesion Pharma and apply this approach to their atrial fibrillation pipeline, an area where there remains a significant need for new treatment options.”

Dr. Elisabeth V. Carstensen, Vice President CMC at Acesion Pharma, adds: “We are pleased to work with Quotient Sciences to investigate how AI-enabled algorithms can support formulation development for our small-molecule programs. Having a data-driven approach to guide formulation decisions could help us move more efficiently toward clinical testing while supporting development of a product that meets the desired profile.”
