Codis Advances Haverhill Expansion to Increase Commercial Spray Drying Capacity

Key Points

  • Demolition is complete at Codis' Haverhill, U.K., site, clearing the way for a new GEA Pharma-SD PSD-4 solvent-capable spray dryer.
  • The expansion increases commercial-scale production of amorphous solid dispersions, a formulation approach used to improve poorly soluble drug candidates.
  • The additional spray drying capacity is expected to become available in the fourth quarter of 2027, complementing Codis' Nottingham capabilities.

Codis has completed demolition work at its Haverhill, U.K., site, clearing the way for construction of a new facility that will expand its commercial-scale spray drying capabilities for pharmaceutical applications. The project centers on the installation of a GEA Pharma-SD® PSD-4 solvent-capable spray dryer. Once installed and validated, the equipment will increase Codis’ capacity to manufacture amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) using solvent-based spray drying, a technology used to improve the performance of poorly soluble drug candidates.

The expansion is intended to help pharmaceutical companies move promising compounds into larger-scale production. Poor aqueous solubility can limit drug absorption and bioavailability, making formulation technologies such as ASDs important tools in pharmaceutical development. The company is building within its existing site and plans to leverage established infrastructure and the expertise of its team at the 100,000-square-foot current cGMP facility.

The Haverhill investment will complement Codis’ existing capabilities in Nottingham, where the company provides formulation development, analytical services, clinical supply, and oral solid dose manufacturing. Together, the sites are intended to provide a more connected pathway for programs progressing from early formulation work to commercial-scale spray drying.

The project remains on schedule, with the dryer’s Factory Acceptance Test planned for November. Codis expects the additional spray drying capacity to become available in the fourth quarter of 2027.
