Biograil Raises Funds to Prepare Oral Drug Delivery Platform for Phase 1 Trials

  • Biograil secured $22.4 million from Verve Ventures, Megatrend Invest and HTGF to advance its BIONDD oral delivery platform.
  • BIONDD uses a capsule-housed device that attaches to the stomach wall to deliver injectable medicines orally for systemic absorption.
  • The funding supports GLP studies and GMP manufacturing preparations ahead of Phase 1 first-in-human testing.

Biograil has secured $22.4 million in new funding to advance development of its BIONDD oral drug delivery platform, which is designed to administer therapeutics typically given by injection. The Copenhagen-based biotechnology company said the financing was backed by existing investors Verve Ventures and Megatrend Invest, with participation from High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) through its HTGF Opportunity growth fund. HTGF initially joined Biograil’s seed investor group in 2019. Verve Ventures led the first close of an $9.5 million financing round announced in July 2025.

HTGF’s continued investment reflects its confidence in the company’s approach as it moves toward clinical development. “We first invested in Biograil in 2019 because we saw the potential of its approach to oral drug delivery,” says Anke Cassing, Principal at HTGF. She added that the firm’s participation through its growth fund supports the company’s preparations for clinical development.

Biograil’s BIONDD platform is intended to make it possible to administer certain biologic and other injectable medicines orally. The technology is housed in a standard-size capsule, available in double-zero or single-zero formats. Once swallowed, the capsule dissolves in the stomach, releasing a device equipped with a spring-loaded mechanism that attaches to the stomach wall and delivers the drug into the surrounding tissue for systemic absorption.

The device is manufactured using injection-molding technology and is designed to pass through the gastrointestinal tract after drug release. Biograil says the device is bio-compostable and is intended to provide a safe means of delivery without requiring conventional injection.

CEO Karsten Lindhardt says the latest financing, together with non-dilutive funding from partnerships, will help the company move BIONDD toward Phase 1 clinical studies. He also pointed to the platform’s potential to support oral versions of established injectable medicines, as well as new combination products that may be difficult to develop using conventional delivery approaches.

The funding will support preparations for first-in-human testing, including nonclinical Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) studies and establishment of a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) manufacturing process. Biograil is targeting these milestones ahead of a larger financing round planned for 2027. Its investor group also includes Eli Lilly and Company, Sanner Ventures, Evonik Venture Capital, Anobis GmbH and Roquette Ventures, alongside the investors participating in the latest round.
