Vertex Pharmaceuticals plans to establish a 155,000-square-foot research facility at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, England, expanding its research and development footprint within the region’s life sciences sector.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, subject to planning and regulatory approvals. The proposed facility will be located next to the new CO building in Harwell’s Accelerator Quarter, an area designed to support science and technology companies as they move from early-stage research toward commercial growth.

The development adds to Harwell’s growing life sciences community, which brings together companies, academic institutions, and research organizations. The campus is operated through a 50:50 joint venture involving private-sector investor Brookfield and the Science and Technology Facilities Council, alongside the UK Atomic Energy Authority.

Professor Michele Dougherty, Executive Chair of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, says the investment aligns with Harwell’s goal of connecting government, academia, and industry to address major scientific and healthcare challenges. She added that the facility would complement the site’s national laboratories and further strengthen Oxfordshire’s position as a center for life sciences research.

Jim Stretton, Managing Director of Harwell Campus, says Vertex’s decision to invest at the site reflects the strength of the local research ecosystem and its established health cluster. He added that the new space is expected to support the company’s research and development teams as they work to advance new therapies for patients.

The planned facility represents another addition to Harwell’s expanding science infrastructure, as the campus continues to attract investment from organizations seeking access to a collaborative research environment and the broader Oxfordshire innovation network.
